However men do not seem to know that there is a difference between an aftershave, Eau de Toilette and Cologne. They often use these terms interchangeably and mix up the whole purpose served by each. Types and differences between the fragrances

Aftershave
It is the percentage of perfume oil or juice which acts as a differentiator between the three. An Aftershave contains the least amount of perfume oil and it does not last more than two to three hours. It is not a long lasting smell as the percentage of oil is in between 1 to 3 percentages, which is comparatively very small. It has some cooling agent and alcohol to act as antiseptic and refresh your skin after shave.
Eau de Toilette and Eau de Cologne
Whereas Eau de Toilette is much stronger and lasts longer may be till evening and leave you fresh for your date in the evening. But it is better to splash some Aftershave on your face to give a look to your appearance. EDT has 4-5% of perfume oil or juice (as some call it), due to high content of oil in it; you should not use it on the face. The use can leave your face red and blotchy, so you better be careful.
And Eau de Cologne is in between the two, with the percentage of perfume oil ranging from 2-5%. Though it contains less oil but it does not last for long.
Eau de Perfum
Men’s perfume, rare in origin! The percentage of perfume oil in men’s perfume is very high; it goes up to 15-30%. This makes it very expensive; the rest of the bottle is filled of alcohol. Some of the names of Eau de Perfum for men is by Givenchy’s Pi range and Yves Saint Laurent’s Opium Homme range.
Perfume is typically for those who want a strong smell that should last the whole day long. You can also get Men’s body splashes and sprays which do not have very high strength of smell and it varies from 1% to 4%.
How to apply different types of fragrances
For that lingering and everlasting smell, you have to apple fragrance on your pulse. The quantity of application of perfume is determined by the amount of perfume oil. The higher the percentage, lesser should be the application. A touch of Eau de Perfum is enough to linger for generations to come.
Even Eau de Toilette is put on the pulse points. The reason why pulse points are selected is simple, the smell of any fragrance lasts longer if it is put in the areas where veins are near the skin surface. Thus the best points to apply your fragrance is neck, wrist and do not forget chest.

Confusion created by the Manufacturers
We cannot put the blame entirely on the men for interchanging the terms, even the manufacturers or the fragrance house call an Eau de Toilette potential fragrance as Cologne.
Cologne is of mild fragrance and it is used for freshening you and nothing more than that. It should not have a very strong smell as EDT. Very few fragrance houses uses the terms correctly as Guerlain, they do not mix up with the names.
Information makes a difference, so stay aware and learn the basics of perfume. Aftershave is not as strong as EDT. Do not judge by the prefix Eau, it is not the watered tone and is not even weaker fragrance like Ladies Eau de Toilette. Men’s EDT is more expensive than an Aftershave. Next time when you go for perfume shopping, know your taste and preference and then select the type of fragrance.

How to protect your Fragrance from evaporating
