The Japanese designer Issey Miyake is famous for bringing innovation into the world of fashion thanks to his technology driven approach to the creation of apparel. The brand, which bears his name, now has a number of clothing lines and lines for watches and fragrances. The L'Eau D'Issey perfumes for men and women are among the top selling fragrances ever created.
Issey Miyake was born in 1938 in Hiroshima and survived the atomic bombing of the city in 1945. He earned a degree in graphic design from the Tama Art University in Tokyo in 1946 and worked for designer houses such as Guy Laroche and Givenchy before he returned to the Japanese capital to start his own fashion house and shop in 1970. He started making women's apparel introducing his first collection in 1971. Later in the 70's he started designing menswear as well.
In the late 1980's Issey Miyake introduced an innovative method for pleating which allowed pleated clothing to retain its shape and appeal with little care and maintenance while giving perfect comfort to the wearer. The so called garment pleating technique is used for creating the items from the Pleating Please line. With this technique, the garments are sewn together first. Then they are put between layers of paper and stacked into a heat press where the pleating takes place. When the garments are taken out of the press and the paper is removed, they are ready to wear.
The main line of the brand continues to bear the designer's name. Even though Issey Miyake retired from his position as head designer of the luxury fashion brand in 1997, he continues to oversee the design and production processes taking place within his company. The Pleating Please line continues to offer extravagant pleated women's garments made from jersey and polyester. The Fete line of women's clothing is colourful, joyful and bold. The HaaT line offers casual apparel for women. A-POC is a custom collection for men and women.
L'Eau D'Issey for women is the first fragrance of Issey Miyake. It was launched back in 1992 and still remains one of the most popular women's perfumes thanks to its blend of light aquatic and floral notes. The bottle of the fragrance was designed by Miyake himself. It was inspired by the view of the Eiffel Tower at moonlight which the designer enjoyed from his Paris apartment. When the name of the perfume is pronounced it sounds like "odyssey". This game with words certainly adds to the unique charm of the perfume.
L'Eau D'Issey Pour Homme was launched in 1994 and then relaunched in 2004. It is one of the best selling fragrances for men. It is adored by men worldwide for its citrusy and aquatic appeal. The L'Eau D'Issey range of perfumes is now quite large. Other notable fragrances of the brand include A Scent for women and Pleats Please for women which came out in 2012.
