Being the largest manufacturer of sports shoes and clothing in Europe and the second largest in the world, Adidas makes shoes, outfits and accessories for virtually all kinds of sports from football to golf and from running to gymnastics. Some of the most famous athletes in the world promote the brand which is constantly expanding. Now their product range includes accessories such as eyewear, watches and bags and perfumes for women and men.
Adidas was founded back in 1948 in Germany by Adolf (Adi) Dassler. Adolf started manufacturing sports shoes after he returned home from the battle fields of World War I. In 1924, his brother Rudolf (Rudi) joined the expanding business. The company was called Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory.
The breakthrough for the sports shoe brand came at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany. Adi Dassler persuades US sprint runner Jesse Jones to wear the company's spikes. This was the first sponsorship for an African American athlete. Owens won four gold medals and all of a sudden the trainers of numerous national teams from around the world started ordering shoes from the Dassler brothers. The company sold over 200,000 pairs every year before the outbreak of World War II.
During WWII, the factory of the brothers' company was used for the making of anti-tank weapons and was almost destroyed during the 1945 bombings carried out by the US army. Adi's wife saved it from complete destruction after convincing the American forces that the company's sole goal was the making of sports shoes. The American forces occupying Germany became the major clients of the brand later on.
Due to personal conflict, the company was split and in 1948 Adi Dassler founded Adidas while his brother founded Puma. The bitter rivalry between the two brands lasted for over a decade. Adidas started making sports apparel in 1960 and football equipment in 1963. Ever since 1970, the official ball for all major football events was made by the company.
In 1987, Adidas was sold to Bernard Tapie who later sold it to Robert Louis-Dreyfus. The company prospered throughout the 1990's and the first decade of the 21st century. It acquired Reebok and introduced the first production shoes with a microprocessor.
At present, numerous sports stars are officially endorsed by Adidas. The list includes footballer Lionel Messi, tennis players Any Murray and Caroline Wozniacki, English cricket star Kevin Pietersen and NBA players Tracy McGrady and Dwight Howard. Many national hockey, gymnastics and rugby teams wear outfits created by the brand.
Adidas entered an agreement with Coty for making fragrances back in 1985. The brand introduced its first fragrance in 1990. There are fragrances for both men and women with the men's collection enjoying astounding popularity. All perfumes of the brand are fresh and sporty and come in attractive bottles with sports design.
